PROJECT 365: I WANT TO RIDE MY BICYCLE

August 27, 2010: I took this photo late last week while I was downtown.

Looking back through my photo archives, I noticed how often I stop and take pictures of bikes.

I admit, I'm not a big bike rider, so I'm wondering what it is about bikes (if not riding them) that so obviously appeals to me?

I HEART FACES: PHOTOJOURNALISM

I'm so excited about this week's I Heart Faces theme!  I graduated from college with a degree in communications, and although my emphasis was in advertising, I took several journalism classes along the way.  In my alternate life, I imagine myself as a photojournalist, travelling the world covering important news stories.  In my real life, I travelled to Boulder, CO and took pictures of these street performers.  Granted, it's not late breaking news, but I have a feeling these musicians have a story to tell.

I wonder what the story is behind the tiny footprints on that banjo?

THE PHOTO ALPHABET

I've started a new photography project that I'm really excited about--a photo alphabet.  I know I'm not the first person to do this, but it really appealed to me as someone who has quite a collection of children's alphabet books. My goal is to photograph every letter of the alphabet. Not actual letters, but things that look like letters.

There are so many things I love about this project already.  Like the way it gets you looking at things in different ways, and from different angles (like upside down and backwards).  It also tests your editing skills with opportunities for creative cropping, and it's a a good outlet for getting super artsy with your photographs.  Not always the best thing to do with pictures of your kids.

I'm thinking it might make for a fun weekly photo challenge.  In the spirit of keeping it simple, I'd post a letter once a week, and give everyone else the chance to post a letter too.  We wouldn't even have to share the same letters or have a weekly letter theme.  We'd just share our favorite alphabet photo from that week.  Maybe, after a while, we'd all have a complete collection of alphabet photos.

THE MAILBOX PROJECT: THE LOG CABIN

Check out more photos in my mailbox series here.

APPLES

I stopped by the university campus this morning to take a few outdoor shots at the flower gardens, and there were apples everywhere!  Technically, I think they're crab apples, but they made for some nice pictures anyway . . .

I'm sharing over at You Capture, where the theme this week is Outside.  You can see more beautiful outdoor shots over at I Should Be Folding Laundry.

THE BURMIS TREE

This week, I've decided to join the In a Yellow House Photo Challenge.  The theme this week is trees, and this old tree in Alberta, Canada has quite a story behind it.

You'll notice the steel rod propping it up . . . apparently there's another rod inside the trunk. It's actually been dead since the 70's, and was blown over by the wind in 1998. But the locals couldn't stand to see it lying there, so they went out and propped it up with rods and brackets. Then, to add insult to injury, some hooligans came along in 2004 and cut off one of its branches.  The locals weren't going to stand for that either, so they glued it back (with wood glue, I presume) on and propped it up with a steel rod.

It's rumored to be one of the most photographed trees in the world, so I guess I was in good company when I took this picture during our visit to Canada last year.  You can see more beautiful tree photos here:

UTAH SHAKESPEAREAN FESTIVAL

One of my favorite shots from Scottish Night at the Utah Shakespearean Festival. I'm partial to the violin because my oldest son plays, and it's such a beautiful instrument.

PROJECT 365: EVERYDAY THINGS

April 11, 2010: This week, the theme at You Capture is Everyday Things.  I took pictures of a lot of everyday things and started to wonder what the photos said about me and the way I spend my days.  So, as a reminder to myself, I'm sharing a photo of what should be an everyday thing for me.  Some days I do better than others, but I'm working on it!

PROJECT 365

August 7, 2010: I saw these rugs and pillows displayed outside a quirky housewares store in Boulder, CO.  I couldn't resist photographing all the bright colors.

SNEEK PEAK: NEILSON FAMILY

Last weekend, I spent time at a family reunion with aunts, uncles and cousins I haven't seen in quite a few years.  One of my cousins asked if I'd take some family pictures for her while I was there.  Of course, with kids as cute as hers, it was a pleasure!

PROJECT 365

July 31, 2010:  I captured this shot almost a week ago, while we were on vacation.  I'm just now getting caught up on my photo editing and had to share this Project 365 photo.  My oldest found this horned lizard during a family reunion last weekend.  Reminded me of summers growing up in Wyoming, where we used to catch these often.

YOU CAPTURE: SUMMER

This week's You Capture them is summer, and nothing says summer vacation like a family reunion. Which is where we we've been for the last week . . . at a cabin in the Utah mountains, roasting marshmallows with grandma and grandpa and all the cousins.

Check out all the other summer photos this week at I Should be Folding Laundry.
